BREAKING NEWS: Better Nigeria as FG and Organised Labour sign agreement

This Monday evening, the Nigerian Federal Government and Organised Labour reached a consensus over the ongoing dispute regarding the minimum wage.

This agreement was the result of an extended meeting facilitated by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.

The meeting was called in response to a nationwide strike that had brought activities across Nigeria to a standstill.

Details of the agreement

OUTCOMES OF THE MEETING BETWEEN THE NIGERIAN FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND THE ORGANISED LABOUR ON MONDAY, 3RD JUNE, 2024

Following the withdrawal of Labour from the negotiations led by the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage (NMW), the National Assembly leadership stepped in on 2nd June, 2024. In order to press for their demands, the Organised Labour declared a nationwide strike on Monday, 3rd June, 2024.

In the interest of the nation, the Federal Government convened a meeting with Labour in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on Monday, 3rd June, with the aim of resolving the strike action.

After thorough discussions and negotiations between both parties, the following resolutions were agreed upon:

I. The President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is committed to a National Minimum Wage exceeding N60,000;

II. Following this, the Tripartite Committee will meet daily for the next week with the aim of agreeing on a National Minimum Wage;

III. In respect of the President’s commitment mentioned in point (ii) above, Labour agrees to convene a meeting of its organs immediately to consider this commitment; and

IV. No worker will face repercussions as a result of the industrial action.

This agreement was finalised in Abuja on the 3rd of June, 2024.
